HMBHS Chromebook Take-Home Program, rolling out this coming school year!

Dear Parents and (Future!) Students of Half Moon Bay High School,

We have exciting news about technology in the classroom for our upcoming 2018-19 school year!

Currently, Half Moon Bay High School has class sets of Chromebook laptop computers in a limited number of classrooms, so not every teacher has access to them, although by number there are about as many Chromebooks as there are students at the school. As a result we are changing this arrangement to one in which we check out to each and every student their very own Chromebook to be used throughout their time here at HMBHS.

During Freshmen Orientation on August 13, our incoming 9th graders will each get a new Chromebook. The sophomores will get new ones as well, when school begins.

Juniors and seniors will be given the ones currently in use. All students will check them out from the library.

In order to make these internet-based laptops useful to all students, we have also received a grant for wireless hotspots that students without wireless access at home can check out,and which will work only with their school Chromebooks.

As we are now looking to have to replace many of our oldest Chromebooks as it is, we would be looking at an equivalent annual expense going forward. This initiative allows us to distribute them more equitably,

We will be requiring that students take their Chromebooks home and back to school again, charged and ready every day.

And when they graduate? The Chromebooks are theirs to take with them, as the devices will be approaching the need to be replaced anyway. And after next year, each entering class will get a new set and so on.

We will be sending home material to educate parents and students about this exciting development via email, at registration, and in classrooms and events like Back to School Night. Included in this will be a Loan Agreement Form  which will require parent and student signatures at registration.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

 James Barnes

Assistant Principal, HMBHS

 Sinceramente,

James Barnes

Subdirector, HMBHS

On May 18, 2018, Netflix will be releasing Season 2 of the television series based on Jay Asher’s 2007 book “Thirteen Reasons Why.”

The makers of this show, NetFlix, have not confirmed details about what we can expect from Season 2.

However, as last year’s graphic depiction of suicide, this season is also anticipated to be triggering for young people, especially already vulnerable students.

Early indications are that this season will touch upon highly sensitive subjects: adolescent bullying, rejection, heartbreak, sexual assault, abuse, revenge (possibly even gun violence), depression, desperate and unsuccessful efforts to find help or understanding, and suicide. It is unknown how the television series will ultimately address these issues again. Based on what we have heard through the mental health community, this show will once again be very difficult to watch.

Please see the attached information sheet that details some resources for you.

If you have any questions please email your child's counselor.  Please visit our counselor page at:  https://cunha.schoolloop.com/counseling

Dear Cunha Community:

I wanted to let you know about an incident that happened today at dismissal.

During my supervision of the crosswalk, a Good Samaritan informed me that a registered sex offender was living illegally in a house near the campus.  After hearing that news, I immediately flagged down a member of the San Mateo Sherriff’s Department and informed them of this information.  The Sherriff arrived and quickly started an investigation of the situation.  They determined that there was indeed a registered sex offender living in the house.  The Sherriff took the offender away and he is no longer in the house.  No children were harmed.

Cunha is VERY GRATEFUL to the Good Samaritan for taking the time to speak with me at the crosswalk.  Please remember if you see something odd or “not right” around our campus please let me or the staff on duty know immediately.

Best Regards,

Seth Feldman, Principal

Cunha Intermediate

Celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week and #ThankACunhaTeacher with us! It does not matter if you are a current or former Cunha student we hope you take the time to appreciate that special educator who helped you through your middle school years.

Teachers provide so much to our students—inspiration, motivation and, ultimately, their futures. From May 7-11, 2018, show your thanks and gratitude by treating them like a V.I.T. – VERY IMPORTANT TEACHER.

Teachers change the lives of millions of children every day, and their work and impact extend far beyond the boundaries of the classroom.

Post at #ThankACunhaTeacher and take the time to show your appreciation this week.

Thank you to our PTO for the wonderful appreciation luncheon last week.  And thank you to the ELAC for this weeks teacher appreciation week.

Students and faculty can have a diacritical mark/s added to their name spelling in the yearbook.

Some examples are the accent ( é á ), cedilla ( ç ), diaerisis ( ü ö ), and the tilde ( ñ ).

These markings can represent a part of a person’s identity, heritage, culture, history, and family tradition.

If you are interested, you can submit your name with diacritical mark/s to Mrs. Grover, our librarian, either on an index card or through e-mail.  The deadline to order a yearbook is April 16. Code is 12594118.

We are excited to host our 4th Annual Challenge Day this year on Wednesday, February 28th for our 7th and 8th grade students.

Challenge Day is a fantastic day to help students learn to connect and build self-esteem, address peer pressure and reduce the acceptability of teasing, oppression and all forms of violence.

Students, if you are interested in participating, please see Mrs. Myrick in the counseling office to sign up.  Sign-ups are on a first come first serve basis.

We are also looking for 25-30 adult participants; a well-rounded group of community members, school staff, and parents. It is an all day commitment (no coming and going) 8:00 am-3:30 pm.  If you are interested in volunteering on Wednesday, February 28th please email me at MyrickS@cabrillo.k12.ca.us

There is more information below regarding Challenge Day and a video attached.

For millions of young people, bullying, cliques, alienation and even violence have become deeply ingrained in their daily school experience. Challenge Day provides a way for teens to lift themselves and their schools out of this quagmire, and to create a new environment that reflects the change that they want to see in their school.

Challenge Day is a series of games, activities, group discussions, icebreakers and trust-building exercises that lead to transformation. The walls of separation that divide people from one another are broken down, and the participants leave the experience with new levels of respect and communication with their peers, teachers, parents, community and themselves. The program successfully addresses the issues of violence, racism, teasing, stereotypes, tobacco, drugs and alcohol within the context of teen life.

Challenge Day also helps young people learn to connect through powerful, life-changing programs in their schools and communities.Challenge Day programs increase self-esteem, help shift dangerous peer pressure to positive peer support, and reduce the acceptability of teasing, oppression, and all forms of violence. This program inspires youth and communities to Be the Change they wish to see in the world, and challenge others to do the same.

Hello Cunha Families,

Our Health and Wellness – Dress Code Committee is scheduled to meet again on January 31st to review the results of our Dress Code Survey. We would like to remind EVERYONE—students, teachers, and parents/guardians, to complete the survey about our current dress code. There are two ways to add your opinion to the discussion. First, you can go to the Cunha Homepage and complete the survey electronically. We have both a Spanish version and an English version of the same questions. Secondly, a printed version in Spanish was also sent home to families without easy Internet access. Printed surveys can be returned to the main office. We would like have everyone answer the survey BY NEXT FRIDAY, JANUARY 19TH. If you have already completed the survey, we have your feedback and we are grateful for your time.

Hello parents welcome back to another great year of school.

We wanted to remind you that safety is a top priority here at Cunha  and  ask you to be mindful of all of the students in and around the campus.

In particular please remember to stop at the stop sign at Kelly and Church and wait for students who are in the crosswalk.

Additionally please do not drop off children in the middle of Kelly Street as it is dangerous for them because cars would be swerving to avoid your child and could run into them in the street.

Please use the driveway at the far end of campus and remember to pull all the way through to the end of the driveway.

Safety is our top priority and we want to make sure that all of the students are safe going to and coming home from school.  This means that bikers and scooter riders should be wearing helmets and being safe so they must follow the traffic laws.

One other area we're going to ask for your help;  when picking up your child do not get out of your car and enter the campus. All adults on campus must register at the front office, receive a visitation tag and be properly registered.

Finally you may have heard that we've been talking to your children about the three rules for life we've also given them the three-part test for behavior and safety. Make sure to talk to your child and ask them if they can tell you the 3 rules for success and the three-part Cunha Behavior test. If you need to--see the  website for the answers.

Welcome back to school please remember to be safe and we will see you around.

*****************************************************************************
