Join us on Wednesday, October 4th

International Walk to School Day

International Walk to School Day is on Wednesday, October 4th this year.  It has become part of a larger movement to encourage students all over the world to safely walk, bike, skateboard, or scooter to school as often as possible.

Cabrillo Unified students may participate in Walk to School Day on a voluntary basis.  Talk with your parents about the best way to safely participate.

If you don’t have a safe route to walk or roll to school, or the distance is too far, consider carpooling or taking public transportation as an alternative to riding in a single-family vehicle.

Why Should You Participate?

  • Walking or “rolling” is fun and it increases your independence.
  • Walking or “rolling” helps you get the physical activity you need.
  • Fewer cars on the road helps reduce air pollution and traffic congestion.

Be Safe & Respectful When Riding SamTrans or District Buses

In an effort to provide safe routes to school for all students, we would like to remind Half Moon Bay High School and Cunha Intermediate students to be respectful when waiting for and riding SamTrans or District buses.  CUSD students are expected to treat all passengers and bus drivers with courtesy and respect. Loud, vulgar or intimidating language or actions will not be tolerated. Everyone has the right to a safe journey to and from school.

For your safety and the safety of others, please do the following:

  • When waiting for the bus, stand in a safe area and stay clear of the bus until the door is opened, then board the bus in an orderly manner.
  • Find a seat as quickly as possible, and stay seated while the bus is moving.
  • Be respectful!  Do not annoy, abuse, disturb or attempt to intimidate other passengers.
  • Don’t be loud or use vulgar language, and don’t engage in horseplay or bother any other person inside or outside the bus.
  • For your safety, don’t extend any body parts outside the windows (e.g., head or hands).
  • Keep the aisles and exits clear for safety purposes.
  • When you know your stop is coming up, get your things together.
  • Wait for the bus to stop before getting up to exit, walk to the front, and use the handrail when exiting.

Please remember, by doing your part, your bus driver can stay more focused on getting you to your destination safely.

Dear Parents and HMB Community:

Recently at Cunha, and other schools around the country, there has been a lot of discussion surrounding dress code.  In order to fully understand the community and desires of the students we have developed a plan to capture some information.  Cunha students will be participating in a survey that is designed to understand their needs, concerns and wishes as it pertains to the dress code.  After the survey is completed, we will publish the results and make a plan based on student input. We look forward to hearing from our student body on this matter.

Regards,

Mr. Feldman  and Mrs. Kuznik

Saludos,

Sr. Feldman y Sra. Kuznik

This is a reminder to students and parents that tardies are counted when a student is late to school OR late to class. A student who has recorded three (3) or more tardies will be assigned to PBIS sessions. This year the PBIS sessions will be held on Monday and Thursday afternoons for one hour. A student who is assigned to a PBIS session but fails to complete the assignment will have their consequences increased. Students and families will be notified in advance of the tardy infractions so transportation or extracurricular activities can be adjusted.

Thank you for your efforts to have students arrive to school on time.

Hello parents welcome back to another great year of school.

We wanted to remind you that safety is a top priority here at Cunha  and  ask you to be mindful of all of the students in and around the campus.

In particular please remember to stop at the stop sign at Kelly and Church and wait for students who are in the crosswalk.

Additionally please do not drop off children in the middle of Kelly Street as it is dangerous for them because cars would be swerving to avoid your child and could run into them in the street.

Please use the driveway at the far end of campus and remember to pull all the way through to the end of the driveway.

Safety is our top priority and we want to make sure that all of the students are safe going to and coming home from school.  This means that bikers and scooter riders should be wearing helmets and being safe so they must follow the traffic laws.

One other area we're going to ask for your help;  when picking up your child do not get out of your car and enter the campus. All adults on campus must register at the front office, receive a visitation tag and be properly registered.

Finally you may have heard that we've been talking to your children about the three rules for life we've also given them the three-part test for behavior and safety. Make sure to talk to your child and ask them if they can tell you the 3 rules for success and the three-part Cunha Behavior test. If you need to--see the  website for the answers.

Welcome back to school please remember to be safe and we will see you around.

*****************************************************************************

May 15, 2017

Dear Cunha Families,

I am writing with some important news to share with you, the valued members of our wonderful coastside community. It is with mixed emotions that I inform you of my resignation as the principal at Cunha Intermediate School. I am so very honored and grateful to have worked with excellent staff members, smiling and engaged students, committed parents, and involved community members - together we have created an outstanding school and I am extremely proud of our collaborative work over the past three years. Please know that I will continue in my role through the end of June, 2017.

The staff at Cunha Intermediate School is an outstanding group of people. I am proud to have worked alongside a dedicated group, focused on making our school a positive and safe place for  our students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. This collaboration has resulted in a focus on the whole student, setting a high standard for students to achieve expectations of being Respectful, Responsible, Positive, and Safe members of our learning community.

I absolutely cherish every moment I have spent creating memories with our students, inside and outside the classroom walls. I will truly miss them. I will miss starting my day with smiling faces eager to see what the day holds in store for them. I will miss stopping into classrooms and seeing them engaged in new experiences. I will miss the Staff vs. Student games, Leadership spirit competitions and the Super Bowl, legendary Cunha dances, student clubs, Special Olympics, and seeing our students compete in athletics. I will miss the opportunities to connect with them when their lives are difficult...and nobody knows. I will most certainly miss our stories, our handshakes, our high-fives; I will miss each of these special moments, and so many more, all of which genuinely bring daily joy to my life.

Finally, I want to express gratitude to each and every one of you for your support, for entrusting me with your children during a most trying time of their lives. You exemplify the importance of a strong parent community, dedicated to the development and success of all children. I will leave Cunha knowing we have built a strong bond and partnership, ultimately having a positive impact in your child’s life. Cunha Intermediate School is, and will forever be, a very special place - I will miss you all.

With warm regards,

Jarrett Dooley

Jarrett Dooley

Kaiser Permanente's Educational Theatre will be presenting Nightmare on Puberty Street to our entire student body tomorrow, March 30.  A program description and educational goals were sent home with every student and can be found via this link.  Opt out forms were also sent home with each student and are available in the office and below.

Show Summary

Nightmare on Puberty St. is an age-appropriate, live theatrical performance about four young people on their journey through adolescence. As the characters wrestle with the question, “Am I normal?” they learn to cope with the changes affecting their bodies and minds. The frank and sometimes funny program shows students how to cope with many of the issues of puberty, including how to handle pressure to be sexually active, how to build self-esteem, and where to find help if faced with feelings of depression or thoughts of suicide. By the end of the performance, students understand everyone goes through changes during puberty, and there are resources to help them adjust to those changes. Nightmare on Puberty St. was created in conjunction with physicians, teachers, licensed counselors, and parents. The performer/educators in the play receive extensive training from doctors and licensed counselors at the beginning of each school year. Their training continues throughout the year, incorporating updated information as it becomes available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and health care providers.

Opt-out Option

If you DO NOT wish your child to participate in the Nightmare on Puberty St. assembly, please complete the attached Opt-out form. Please return this form to Cunha’s Front Office by Wednesday, March 29th.

Cunha Community,

As most of you are aware or have heard by now, a large percentage of our outdoor lunch tables have been removed from the campus. This decision was made due to deterioration of the seats, which created an unsafe situation for our students.

We are working with the school district to find a solution and hope to have more tables and benches soon. In the meantime, the MU will be open during lunch with additional seating for students. If you have any input on replacement options for tables and benches, please feel free to contact Mr. Dooley or Mr. Gutierrez.

Dear Parents of Cunha 8th graders:

Your students will be in high school before you know it! Registration for classes at Half Moon Bay High School begins January 23. On Thursday, January 26 at 6pm in the HMBHS Library, we will host an 8th grade parent registration info session.

Our principal, John Nazar, and our head counselor, Courtney Coburn, will introduce the session and go over general information. Then our department chairs will go over their subject’s pathway throughout a student’s years at the high school until graduation.

The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.

Parents, Students, & Cunha Community,

As you may be aware, we have been discussing the installation of perimeter fencing over the past few years in an effort to increase student and staff safety, and to be able to better secure our facilities during and after school hours.

As a result, fencing installation will begin tomorrow in the first phase of the project. This will include fencing at the Library, to connect to Buildings D and A at the Church Street entrances. The additional phase will include the span from Buildings A to C at the parking lot, Building C entry at the field, as well as securing the access/entry point to the fields.

As mentioned, our goal is to improve student and staff safety, and the security of our facilities. An additional goal is to continue community access to our wonderful fields during non-school hours.

All entry points, once both project phases are completed, will include hardware allowing gates to be opened from the inside at all times. All entry points will be locked from the exterior, resulting in visitors being required to check-in at the Main Office.

When the project is nearing completion, more information will be sent out to update you. Stay tuned for this update and feel free to contact me with any questions. I do apologize for the short notice, but we are taking advantage of the break in weather to get the first phase of this project completed so it does not impact classrooms.

Thank you,

Mr. Dooley

PS-we will be brainstorming how to improve fencing aesthetics when installation is complete. This will include landscaping, art, and any other ideas - please contact me if you have ideas or experience in this area.

Coastside Young Actors Workshop is an after school theater program for kids from K-12th grade. Using a technique known as “guided improvisation”, the students create and star in new musical productions which they perform for the community during the Winter/Spring session, scare thousands at the Pumpkin Festival Haunted House during the Fall Session, and perform improv skits on stage during both sessions. Classes meet after school once per week.

Hello parents!  Thank you so much for your generous giving during our Annual Giving Drive.  Classes that had 100% participation in the drive are getting their Pizza Parties during lunchtime at school.  We have had 2 days of Pizza Parties and 2 more coming up this Friday and next Monday.

We are also working on the planning of the School Wide Prize and will announce what it is and when it will be soon!

If you gave to the Annual Giving Drive, donation receipts for donations of $25 or more have all been emailed out, if we had an email address for you.  If you have not received a receipt for your tax deductible donation and would like one, please email the PTO treasurer Kris Durham at bubbleandsweet@gmail.com and she will get a receipt out to you.

Again, THANK YOU for your generous giving to the Cunha PTO so that we can fund activities for the staff and students!

In August, SamTrans altered the 17 Bus schedule to drop off and pick up students directly at the end of the Lewis Foster Drive sidewalk, rather than having them cross Main during commute times. To do this the bus route has been altered to drive northbound on Main Street, during school hours. This special bus is being called route 18, although it is otherwise the same as 17 from Montara to Moonridge. The updated schedule, which goes into effect on Tuesday, September 6th, is attached.

The purpose of this survey is to obtain parent perceptions of school climate as they relate to student well-being, opportunities, and learning. The survey is a companion to the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), a comprehensive student health risk and resilience assessment tool (grades 5, 7, 9 & 11) and the California School Climate Survey (CSCS) for staff. All parents should be given the opportunity to participate, regardless of which grades are being surveyed among students.
   · Participation is voluntary. It is also very important. The information provided will help guide district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, improve student achievement, and reduce health risks that stand as barriers to learning.
   · This is an anonymous survey. It is designed so that participating parents/guardians cannot be identified from the data.
   · All questions apply to this school only.
   · The results are for the use of your district. CDE/CHKS will preserve data confidentiality and refer any data requests to the district.

Below please find information on accessing the survey for each of your schools.
Your online surveys are active from September 21, 2015 to August 05, 2016
Schools may access and take surveys anytime during that period.

SCHOOL CODE is JP66YC

Parents & Community Members:

Hatch Elementary School has invited five university graduates from Spanish speaking countries to work at Hatch and Cunha through Amity Institute’s Intern Exchange Program. The Amity Interns gain teaching experience while sharing their native language and culture with Hatch and Cunha students and the HMB community. Check attached for Amity Bios!

Screen Shot 2016-05-05 at 11.39.47 AM.png

The Amity Interns need housing and meals while they complete their internship here so we are currently seeking Host Families. A Host Family provides a room and meals for five months; and in exchange, the Amity Intern brings another language and culture into the home and the family increases Spanish comprehension and gains a richer perspective on another part of the world.  Many host families and interns develop lifelong relationships continuing to stay in touch and visit one another for years as presented in this video.

Host Families:

  • Live on the coast
  • Provide meals and a private bedroom (shared bathroom ok)
  • Host either first (Aug 2016-Jan 2017) or second semester (Jan-Jun 2017)
  • Do not need to speak Spanish
  • Do not need to have children at Hatch or Cunha
  • Do not need to have children living at home

If you or anyone you know would like information about hosting an Amity Intern, please contact Stephanie Izzarelli at buzzame@gmail.com for more information. Thank you!

Parents & Students,

Cunha’s 2016 CAASPP/SBAC standardized testing schedule has been finalized. All tests will be administered during students’ 1st Period classes (either 1A or 1B) for the entire week of May 9-13. See below for the schedule, or click here.

Screen Shot 2016-04-25 at 12.37.11 PM.png

General Information and Reminders include:

  • There will be no 0 Period during testing week; we understand this results in lost instructional time, but it is best practice to begin school with testing sessions

  • Have your students rested and prepared with a well-balanced breakfast each day of testing

  • Mark your calendars; student attendance during testing week is extremely important

  • Want to check out the test? Take a Practice Test!

  • For more information, check out the SBAC/CAASPP website

Some testing highlights include:

  • Computer Adaptive: Students receive test questions that provide unique information about what they know and can do. A correct answer is followed by a more difficult question, and an incorrect answer is followed by an easier question. This provides a more precise estimate of student understanding.

  • Realistic Context for Tasks: Knowledge is assessed in context—for example, students are asked to select a word of the same meaning to replace a word in a paragraph, rather than to choose a synonym for a word standing alone. In addition, students will need to provide open-ended answers for some questions, rather than selecting from multiple options, and will be asked to write short essays that will need to be scored by hand.

  • No Time Limits: Students can take the time they need to do their best.

If you have questions about the assessments, feel free to contact your student's Counselor. Thank you in advance for supporting your students and Cunha Intermediate School during our testing administration of 2016!

Hey cubs! This week’s special event is Junk in the Trunk, this event will be held in the quad during lunch after everyone is dismissed. You will need 1 person from your spirit class to participate in this event. How this event works is each person will get a tissue box filled with ping-pong balls tied around their waist. The open side of the box will be facing away from you and on top of your bottom.  Once everyone has the box tied around their waist, Leadership will instruct you to go. The objective of this event is to empty the box by shaking your hips back and forth. The first person to empty their box out will be the winner! 7th and 8th graders will go today and 6th graders will go on tomorrow.

This is an important message regarding current 6th and 7th grade schedules for next school year. Based upon the newly proposed Spanish Program, if your student is interested in the non-Immersion Spanish elective class and would like to request a second elective by enrolling in a zero period class, please contact your student's counselor. The request for a second elective does not guarantee enrollment but every effort will be made to accommodate.

Ms. Myrick is counselor for last names A-L, myricks@cabrillo.k12.ca.us and Ms. Lee is counselor for last names M-Z, leej@cabrillo.k12.ca.us. Email is the preferred method of contact.

We want to make it easier for students to ride their bikes to

school (for those who have safe routes to get here)! We

know some of your bikes aren’t working so great and that’s

why we’ve invited The BikeMobile to provide Free Tune

Ups for everyone on Tuesday, 2/23, 12:30-3:30pm @ Cunha!

Is your bike making one of those mystery sounds? Is it in

your garage collecting dust because it has a flat tire or

worse, no tire at all? If so, bring it to school on February

23rd (tomorrow), because between 12:30 and 3:30, the

BikeMobile will be providing FREE tuneups and repairs.

The BikeMobile can fix flat tires, adjust brakes and gears,

and even replace broken or worn out parts like chains,

seats, pedals, and tires. The only thing it can’t do is replace missing

wheels or gears. While the mechanics work on your bike,

they’ll explain how your bike works and how to keep it

running smoothly.

If you don't have a lock for your bike, you can leave it in the

M.U. until after school.

Space is limited, so arrive early to secure a spot. Bike or no

bike, everyone is welcome to attend!

Also, a limited supply of FREE bike helmets will be supplied

to those who need them.

We will discuss Doll Bones in the library at lunch on Thursday, February 25 and you will receive 25 extra points.

Attention all 8th graders! the D.C. forms are due today! Turn them into Mr. Cox’s class room by the end of today!

Wow, Alex! Your hair for Crazy Hair Day looks unbeweavable!

Alex: Thanks, Maya! Yours looks pretty good yourself.

Maya: Thanks!

Alex: Just make sure to keep it in for when your spirit rep combs by your class to count how many people participated.

Maya: Thanks for the heads up!

The results for Pictionary are in. For 8th grade, 3rd place is Cox, 2nd place goes to Dei Rossi and Murray got first! For 6th grade, Shands Serret got 3rd, Coyle received 2nd place and Pierce and Papp tied for first. Great job cubs!

Great job for making the Penny Wars a success! And the final results are in: Starting with the 6th graders, we have Longaker in 3rd place with 23,833 points, Coyle in 2nd with 33,859 points, and finally in first place is… (drumroll) O’Connor Brown’s class with a total of 49,262 points! For the 7th graders, we Hitchner came into second with 8,334 points, Cardona took 2nd with 32,264 points, and 1st place goes to… (drumroll) Lugo/Monica with 58,532 points! Lastly, we have the 8th graders. Taking 3rd place with 1,262 points we have Dei Rossi, coming in 2nd place is Mote with 1,447 points, and taking first by a landslide is… (drumroll) Lawrence with a total of 22,071 points! Great job to everyone who participated! This will conclude the Penny Wars.

Our favorite intramural is back this week, Greek Dodgeball! The 8th graders had a great day back yesterday. Here are the results: On court one, and Oldman had a tough battle. In the end, Au/Angst came out on top! Over on court 2, MCcartney took on Robinson. It was brutal, but _________ takes the win! Cardona and Lugo Monica occupied court three. It was head to head all lunch, but the victory goes to ____________! And last, but not least, Hitchner and Reed on court four. It was rough out there with the wind, but both teams played great. And the win goes to… _________! Today 8th graders will go. On court 1 Mote will face Cox on court 2 Lawrence will play Aguilar on court 3 Dei Rossi will go against Demers and on court 4.Murray will have a BYE. Good luck Cubs!

Today’s Friday activity will be a grade level activity and will be held on the basketball courts. You will need 4 people from your first period class. Each person will have a cup except the person at the end. You will all stand in a line and the first person will have an M&M in their cup. They must then toss the M&M to the next person with their cup, and the next person will have to catch the M&M using only their cup. This will continue down the line. Since the last person doesn’t have a cup, they have to catch the M&M with their mouth! After they catch the M&M, they will run to the front of the line, grabbing the last person’s cup on their way up, and start over. You will continue this until everyone has caught an M&M in their mouth. If at anytime you drop an M&M, you will need to start over! 7th grade goes first, 8th grade will go second, and 6th graders will go last.  See you out there!

Attention all first period classes! Today is a triple point day! That means you get triple points for having crazy hair, the Friday activity, everything!

The birthdays for today are Madaline Beckner and Alexis Gracia. Have a happy birthday cubs!

Hey cubs! The next special event is Pictionary, for this event you will need 2 people from your spirit class. This event will be held in the quad, during lunch, after everyone is dismissed. How Pictionary works is you and your partner will both sit down--one will be drawing and the other will be guessing. The person drawing will be given a card with a word, and their partner will have to guess it. For example, the word you will have to draw could be a hat, so you would draw a hat for your partner to guess. After your partner guesses what it is, leadership will give the person drawing another card. If your partner does not guess the word, leadership will take that card and exchange it for a different card. YOU CAN NOT WRITE WORDS OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT GIVES AWAY THE WORD, YOU CAN ONLY DRAW. The class that guesses the most words is the winner! 7th graders will go today.

Owen, that new Sheerlock Combs movie was unbeweavable!

Maya: It sure was, Lauren! It gave me a bunch of ideas to do with my hair tomorrow.

Lauren: Oh no! It’s crazy hair day tomorrow, Maya! There’s no time left to think of something to do!

Maya: It’s alright. Just brush it off. There is still time to comb up with something to do.

Lauren:  Let’s think of some crazy styles to do.

Maya: You could dye your hair rainbow?

Lauren: Something crazier.

Maya: How about you make your hair look like Princess Leia!

Lauren: That’s pretty good! But, what are some other ideas?

Maya: You can make your hair look like Medusa!

Lauren: Perfect! Can’t wait to show up to school tomorrow so everyone can admire my crazy hair!

Maya: Me too. Now I have to go figure out what I’m gonna do!

*Star Wars theme song* Great job for making the Penny Wars a success! A special thank you to everyone who participated in Penny Wars for Leukemia. The results will be out shortly.

Due, to the poor weather conditions, we haven’t been able to do a Friday activity, but there will be one tomorrow! Tomorrow’s special event will be a grade level activity and will be held on the basketball courts. You will need 4 people from your first period class. Maya: What?! The dance is coming up?? I had no idea!

Lauren: Don’t worry, I’ll tell you everything you need to know.

Maya: Alright. Let’s start with when will it be?

Lauren: The dance will be tonight from 6:30 to 9:00.

Maya: Wow, it’s tonight! It’s too late to perfect my dance moves!

Lauren: That’s okay! You can still have a blast at the dance even if you don’t know how to dance. You can take pictures at the photo booth, play games in the game room, eat food in the food room, or watch the movie Goosebumps in the movie room. And later I can teach you Mrs. Wolk’s dance move, the shovel, that I learned yesterday!

Maya: I am so pumped for this Friday now! The food, the games, the music, the movie, the pictures, and of course the dancing, are always a blast.

Lauren: I'm so excited too!

Maya: But wait, where should I line up when I get to the dance?

Lauren: It will be the same as the last dance. 8th graders will line up on the doors on Kelly street, 7th graders will enter through the boy’s locker room doors, and 6th graders will line up at the girl’s locker room door.

Maya: Sounds easy enough!

Lauren: Oh, one more thing Maya. There will be only one room to store your stuff, so try to bring as little as possible.

Maya: Gotcha! Where can I buy my ticket?

Lauren: Leadership will be selling tickets in the quad today at lunch for $6.

Maya: Oh no! I have to retake a test at lunch today! I can’t buy my ticket, so I won’t be able to go!

Lauren: No worries, Maya! You can always purchase a ticket at the doors at the dance for $8.

Maya: Phew! Thank goodness! I can’t wait! See you there, Lauren.

Tomorrow is the last day to order your yearbook at the low price of 35$. You will also get your name on the front cover for free! Now listen up, beginning February 1st, your yearbook will be $40 and if you want your name on the cover it will cost you extra. So get your yearbook today!

February Bus Passes will be on sale during lunch. Please see Mrs. Borges.

This Thursday the 28th, is the Magazine Drive, Inflatable & Game Truck Day - if you sold enough to qualify make sure you get a waiver form in the office and return it by Thursday to participate.

The next special event is called Hula ‘till it drops. You will need one person from your spirit class. This event will be held during lunch, in the quad, after the second bell. Everyone will start with a hula hoop. The objective is to hula hoop the longest. Once everyone is hula hooping, for the first five minutes, leadership will toss a ball at you. If your hula hoop drops or you do not catch the ball, you will be eliminated. Whoever is the last one standing, wins! 6th graders will go TODAY, and the 7th and 8th graders will go on Thursday. Once again 7th and 8th graders will go on Thursday!

Wow! What a great day! Over $500 has already been raised for children with leukemia from Penny Wars. It is amazing how much just a few people can help, even a small amount of money makes a big difference in their lives. Remember students and especially teachers, this drive is just for fun and is really all about raising money for these children. If a student from another class goes to put a $10 bill into your box, let them. Encourage them to donate more. Just because it might lower your score of points, the worst thing that can happen is your class falls into 9th place. You still get 20 points just for participating!

This is the second week of Greek Dodgeball and 7th grade went yesterday. We had some intense games but here are the results: P.S. Lynes came out with the win in the epic battle against Shands Serret with great sportsmanship and participation from both sides. Longaker beat Papp, although with some difficulties, and also had great participation. Pierce, against O'connor, was a tough fight, both teams giving their all, this game ended up a tie. And finally, Coyle challenged Spears which was also a great fight, both teams great sportsmanship and participation, it also ended up a tie. Those were some amazing games cubs! 8th grade goes today. On court one we will have Au Angst vs McCartney, on court 2 Robison will play Oldman, on court 3 Cardona will face Hitchner, and last but certainly not least, Reed will fight against Lugo Monica on court 4. Good Luck!

The Valentine’s Dance is next week, Cunha library books must be returned or renewed before February 4th. To renew a book you must show it to Ms. Grover. Also, all 7th and 8th grade basketball players must turn their jerseys in to Mr. Lugo before the dance or you will not be able to attend.

It’s that time of year again! Valentine's day is coming up. Rose grams will be sold on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. If you want to buy a rose for that special someone, roses will be sold for 3$. They will be passed out on the 10th and the 11th of February. If you are sending a rose to someone, please make sure to write down their 5th period class.

The birthdays for today are Venessa Penazola Vega, Brandon Meza, Kieren Fisher, and Samuel Lowings. Have a Happy Birthday!

Maya: Hey, Lauren! I have a riddle for you. What is brown, has a head and a tail, but no legs?

Lauren: I don’t know, Maya, what?

Maya: A penny!

Lauren: Hahah, that’s a good one! Speaking of pennies, that reminds me about our new community service drive! It is a drive called Penny Wars. It is created to help raise money for children with leukemia.

Maya: That sounds exciting and supports a great cause. How does it work?

Lauren: It’s pretty simple: Each spirit class will be given a box to fill with pennies to gain points--

Maya: That sounds easy enough!

Lauren: That’s not all. Here’s the catch: All other currency such as nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills, are all worth negative points. For example, a dime is worth -10 points. So, say you start off with 10 pennies in your box, but then someone from another class puts a dime in your box, you are back to zero points.

Maya: Oh I get it now! So one penny equals one positive point, a nickel equals -5 points, a dime equals -10 points, and so on.

Lauren: Exactly! So make sure to keep filling your box with pennies!

Maya: Great! Well now I know that I’m emptying my piggy-bank as soon as I get home. When does this drive start?

Lauren: Penny Wars will start on the 25th and and continue until February 12th. Leadership will come and empty your boxes at the end of everyday. Just remember not to enter any money during class. You have to put money into the boxes BEFORE or AFTER classes to make sure that this drive does not interrupt class or classwork.

Maya: Thanks for letting me know! I will make sure to have all my pennies ready and put in the box before class on the 25th. I can’t wait!

Lauren: Glad this drive makes cents! (laughing button)

The birthdays for Saturday were Jamie McIntosh, Joey Johnston, and Karenna Wilkinson. The birthdays for Sunday were Jonathan Godinez Jeronimo, Rafael Guevara-Ramirez, Naomi Naito,  and Jessica Padilla. The birthday for today is Sara Sprankle.

Have a happy birthday!

ATTENTION: People from all grades, we will be selling yearbooks in the quad at lunch for 35$ all this week. We accept both cash and checks, but be sure that all checks  are made out to Lifetouch. Buy your yearbook before February 1st because the price will go up and you will also no longer be able to have your name on it. Get them before they’re gone!

Hey all you Cunha athletes! Does your parent come to your games and take photos? Well if they do, we would love to see them in this years yearbook! Please talk to Mrs. Grover about submitting them in the yearbook or if you have any questions!

We had our first basketball playoff games yesterday. Congratulations to the 7A boys, the 7B boys, and they 8A girls for winning and moving on to the next round! Great season to the 8A boys!! Today the 7A girls will have their playoff game at Terman. Wish them good luck!

Our next intramural is Greek Dodgeball! The 6th graders went yesterday and they looked like they were having a blast! Here are the results: On court one, Wolk/Treulich beat the Silly Spears! There was great competition on court two with O’Connor and Coyle. Awesome sportsmanship and effort to both teams, but O’Connor came out on top! Then, we had Papp vs. Pierce on court three. Papp took the first game, then Pierce won the second, and for the tiebreaker… Papp won! And finally, the mighty battle against Longaker and Shands-Serret on court 4. It was a tough game, and Longaker takes the win! Awesome job 6th graders. The 7th graders will play today. On court one is Au/Angst  vs. Robison. On court two is McCartney vs. Oldman. On court three is Cardona vs. Reed. On court four is Hitchner vs. Lugo/Monica. 8th graders will go on Wednesday. Good luck!

Attention all first period classes: Your new spirit rep will stop by your class to introduce themselves.

6th graders interested in playing basketball, there will be an information meeting on Thursday in the MU once you're dismissed from the lunch tables.

Hey cubs, the next library book club meeting will be today!. They will be discussing the book “True Sort Of”. All students who have read this book are welcome to the meeting. Spirit points will be given to students who attend!

ATTENTION: People from all grades, we will be selling yearbooks in the quad at lunch for 35$ all next week.

Our next intramural will be Greek Dodgeball! Here’s how to play: The court will be divided in half. The two classes will be split up on both sides. Each player will start with a least one foot on the base line. There will be 2 balls on the center line. Once your referee starts the game, you will run and try to get a ball. The objective of the game is to get everyone on the opposing team out by hitting them with a ball below the shoulders. If you are hit, you have to go behind the other team’s baseline. This will act as the jail. To be able to return back to your side, you can find a ball and hit a person from the other team. So watch your back if you are in! You can get hit from either side.  The first team to run out of people loses. This will take place on the basketball courts in the gym and outside. Court 1, 2, and 3 will be in the gym and court 4 will be outside. The first games will start today with the 6th graders. On court one is Wolk/Trelich vs. Spears. Court two is O’Connor vs. Coyle. On court three is Papp vs. Pierce. And court four is Longaker vs. Shands-Serret. P.S./Lynes will have a bye. 7th graders go on Wednesday and 8th graders go on Thursday. Good luck!

The birthday’s from the weekend are Gabi Silverman, Andrew Williamson, and Alexa Morales. The birthday’s from Monday are Israel Alvarado, Francis McCambridge, and Matisse Chloe Oudkerkpool Gamache. The birthday’s for today are Frank Huerta, and Cesar Garduno. Have a happy birthday!

The goal of Cunha staff is for our students to be respectful, responsible, positive, and safe.  This year, the wood toys called Kendamas have been extremelely popular and we were happy to see our students enjoy and develop skills with a non-electronic game.

However, they are now having a negative impact on our school environment.  We have had an increase of thefts, students gambling their kendamas away, distracting the learning environment by using them during class, and even risking physical harm by swinging them. Although we tried to avoid this, Kendamas are no longer allowed at Cunha during school hours.  If they are seen, the kendama will be confiscated and returned to a parent.  Please contact an administrator if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Javier Gutierrez

Assistant Principal

Nate: Hey cubs! Lip sync performances have ended! Great job to all of the students who participated, and helped make the shows great!

Mia: Keep sending in those baby photos to the Library 8th graders! But the only way to see those pictures is if you order the Cunha yearbook- the price will go up! So stop in the library to pick up an order form. Remember to turn in your baby photos to the library by December 18th.

Shea: Listen up 8th graders! Mr. Murray and Mrs. Hitchner are holding science fair tutorials. The upcoming tutorial date is January 7th. Make sure to plan ahead!

Mia:  Congratulations Cubs! With your participation in the Pulcera Project, we raised over $2,000. This money will provide 3 months of full time employment and 2 and a half YEARS of classes for a young Nicaraguan. Way to make a difference and COLOR THE WORLD!

Nate: Hey Mia, are you ready for the Reindeer Run?

Mia: What’s the Reindeer Run?

Nate: The Reindeer Run is today’s Friday activity. It will be held in the Quad after the second bell at lunch. You will need 9 students from your Spirit Class plus your teacher. If your teacher can’t make it then have one of your classmates fill their position. The nine students will line up in two rows of four with Rudolf in the front. Your teacher will wrap a jump rope around the “reindeer” like “reins”, and will be holding a bag as if they’re “Santa”. Your sleigh will then go to one of the many Leadership students spread across the quad. The leadership student will ask you a Holiday themed trivia question. If you get it right, you get a candy cane. If you get it wrong, then you will receive a piece of coal. The candy canes are positive points and the coal are negative points. The class with the most points wins.

Mia: Thanks Nate, I can’t wait!

Shea: Students, please pick up your items from the Lost and Found. All items left behind will be donated to GoodWill.

Nate: Leadership Students ran out of time on Monday to pass out all of the Candy Cane grams. They will be passed out over the course of the next few days.

Today is the last day for the Lip Sync with the 6th graders performing today at lunch. If you want to watch the lip sync, the entry fee is $1 at the door. Students in the grade of the one performing will be let in first. If there is still space available, other students in other grades will be let in. So that means the 6th graders will be let in first. When leadership starts playing a song, your group of reindeer must guide “Santa” to one of the many Leadership students standing in the quad. When you get to a leadership student they will ask you a holiday themed trivia question. You will have a few seconds to discuss amongst yourselves and then you must tell the leadership student your final answer. If you get the answer right, you will be given a candy cane for the teacher to put in their bag. If you get the answer wrong, you will be given a piece of coal. Try to go to as many leadership students as possible and answer as many questions a you can- all of them have different questions! When the song stops, you must give your bag to leadership to count your coal and candy canes. Candy canes are positive points and pieces of coal are negative points. The class with the most points wins!
